Modern heat pumps use part of the electricity and thus generate up to four parts of renewable energies from the environment or the ground. Depending on the design, heat pumps can reach system temperatures that make them ideal for use in existing buildings.

"With the strong increase in green electricity, the importance of heat pumps will grow in the future, not only in new buildings, but also when replacing heating systems, especially since the heat pump industry makes a lot of research and development and is now bringing systems with high system temperatures onto the market," says Andreas Lücke, General Manager of the BDH.

In addition, a high system temperature is often not necessary at all, because even small measures such as replacing individual radiators or thermostats, partial modernization of the building envelope, windows, or roof are sufficient to achieve a comfortable living temperature with a heat pump.

"With the planned tax incentives and the exchange bonus for oil heating systems, the federal government is sending a strong signal for energy modernization in German boiler rooms," said Dr. Martin Sabel, Managing Director of the BWP. “Old oil boilers can usually be exchanged for subsidized modern heat pumps. The technology for this is available.” In most cases, the heat pump can even be used for cooling in hot months.

In 2019, BWP and BDH expect sales of around 90,000 heat pumps in Germany. With a market share of 13 percent today, the dynamic growth of this efficient technology is continuing.
