The Carrefour Group has announced a collaboration with GreenYellow, a notable player in decentralized energy transition, to install and manage photovoltaic systems across approximately 350 hypermarket and supermarket car parks in France.
This move supports Carrefour's 2026 vision and aims to enhance the company's real estate value, while establishing a solar energy production target of 1 terawatt-hour annually by 2027 in France, Spain, and Brazil.
Partnership Advantages
This agreement offers several benefits, including a significant decrease in energy expenses through self-consumption. It contributes to Carrefour's goal of utilizing 100% renewable energy in its total electricity usage by 2030.
The initiative also addresses the early impacts of the ApER Law, which mandates installing solar panels on parking areas over 1,500 square meters. Additionally, customer satisfaction is expected to improve due to shade structures that provide protection from adverse weather conditions.
Local Consumer Benefits
Approximately 20% of Carrefour's energy requirements will be met at competitively lower rates
GreenYellow will assume responsibility for financing the solar panel-equipped shade structures, leveraging its recognized expertise in solar operations within the food retail industry. Over the next three years, this equipment is anticipated to produce about 450 gigawatt-hours annually, equivalent to the energy needs of a city with 200,000 residents.
Approximately 20% of Carrefour's energy requirements will be met at competitively lower rates. Any surplus energy not stored will be transferred to the grid or used by nearby consumers, generating additional revenue for Carrefour.
Milestone in Carrefour's 2026 Plan
Alexandre Bompard, Chairman and CEO of Carrefour Group, stated: "This partnership is a major milestone in our Carrefour 2026 plan, which places the fight against climate change as one of its key strategic objectives."
Bompard also emphasized the acceleration of large-scale photovoltaic installations in stores to achieve the aim of 100% renewable electricity usage by 2030. He expressed confidence that GreenYellow's expertise would ensure the success of this ecologically and financially beneficial project.
The Carrefour Group announces that it has entered into a partnership with GreenYellow, the pioneer in decentralized energy transition in France and internationally, for the installation and operation of photovoltaic power production equipment on around 350 of its hypermarket and supermarket car parks in France.
This initiative is in line with the Carrefour 2026 plan and its ambition to enhance the value of real estate assets, reflected in a solar power production target in France, Spain, and Brazil of 1 TWh per year as from 2027.
Partnership advantages
This partnership offers many advantages:
- A significant reduction in energy bills thanks to self-consumption
- A contribution to the objective of using 100% renewable energy in the Group’s total electricity consumption by 2030
- The early consideration of the consequences of the ApER Law on the obligation to install photovoltaic panels on car parks of over 1,500 sqm
- Improved customer path and satisfaction, thanks to shade structures protecting from bad weather and sun
Benefit of consumers in direct proximity
The equipment - shade structures equipped with solar panels - will be financed by GreenYellow, who is bringing its expertise as a highly-recognized solar operator in the food retail sector.
Within three years, this equipment will enable electricity production to reach about 450 GWh per year, representing roughly the consumption of a city of 200,000 inhabitants
The energy produced will cover around 20% of Carrefour stores’ needs, at very attractive rates. Surplus production, not stored, will be injected into the network or for the benefit of consumers in direct proximity, thus generating additional revenue for the Group.
Milestone in Carrefour 2026 plan
Alexandre Bompard, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Carrefour Group, declared: “This partnership is a major milestone in our Carrefour 2026 plan, which places the fight against climate change as one of its key strategic objectives."
"We are thus accelerating the large-scale deployment of photovoltaic power plants in our stores in order to achieve our goal of using 100% renewable electricity by 2030. GreenYellow’s expertise will enable us to succeed in this major impact project, which is as virtuous for the ecological transition as it is for the value of our real estate assets.”
