Aggreko, the provider of mobile modular power, temperature control, and energy services, has been shortlisted for two leading industry awards in recognition of its delivery of a utility-scale power solution for the Virgin Island of St Croix.

energy solution

In 2018, Aggreko signed a three-year contract with Virgin Island Water and Power Authority (VIWAPA) following the failure of the mechanical power generator on the island of St Croix. Since then, Aggreko has delivered 20 MW of flexible, reliable power using efficient gas generators powered by Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

The energy solution is comprised of 1.2 MW power modules to maximize system reliability, efficiency and flexibility while providing power to approximately 26,000 residential and business customers across the island. By 2020, the power solution implemented by Aggreko is projected to save St Croix $6 million in the first two years of the contract.

LPG power plant construction recognition

Aggreko has been selected as a finalist in the Construction Project of the Year category

As a result of this ground-breaking project, Aggreko has been selected as a finalist for the 21st annual S&P Global Platts Global Energy Awards in the Construction Project of the Year category.

The project has been shortlisted in recognition of the fast-track construction of the LPG power plant which meets the highest standards in addition to the deployment of a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compliant fleet. The winners are due to be announced on the 12th of December at a ceremony in New York City.

Shortlisted in the New Frontier category

In further recognition of the project’s success, Aggreko has also been shortlisted in the New Frontier category in Argus LPG Awards for Excellence.

Argus’ judges took into account Aggreko’s innovative approach to overcoming several hurdles in the delivery of the project, such as the huge variations in demand for power and the remote location of the island. The awards ceremony is taking place in London on 18 November.

innovative and energy-efficient outcomes

Pablo Varela, Managing Director, Aggreko Latin America, said “We are absolutely delighted to have been shortlisted for both the S&P Global Platts Global Energy Awards and the Argus LPG Awards for Excellence."

"It is a testament to our team who worked tirelessly to deliver a best-in-class, bespoke power solution for St Croix to meet the unique needs of the island. This project demonstrates Aggreko’s ability to achieve innovative and energy-efficient outcomes for our customers and we are thrilled the wider industry has recognized this."
